Alice Johnson’s Jig

for Singing String Orchestra
works for String Quartet or String Quintet

Composed and Arranged by Deborah Greenblatt

“I composed this piece as an homage to Alice Johnson, who was retiring from over 25 years of string teaching in Fremont, Nebraska. I could not attend her retirement party, so I wrote her this tune instead. Alice later requested an arrangement of the work for her string quartet. I asked her if her string quartet buddies could sing. She replied, ‘I’ll MAKE them!’ We sadly lost Alice this year (2016), but she inspired a whole community of musicians to acheive more than we thought we could.” -- Deborah Greenblatt

This lively jig in A Major (because “A” is for Alice) gives string players a chance to sing and share the saga of a student’s musical progress, one verse at a time.

“Once when I was liddle, I knew that I would fiddle...”
“Once when I was older, I felt a little bolder...”
“Now that I am big, I’m fingering the strings...”
“If I start to slow down, I’ll play and tap my toe down...”

Between verses, this piece is spiced with a handful of mini-musical quotes, just for fun (Twinkle Twinkle, Kreutzer No. 2, Song of the Volga Boatmen, etc.).
