Nebraska Territory Stories Performing as a mid-1800's entertainer, multi-instrumentalist David Seay sings and plays popular folk music of the period. Between tunes he regales his audience with stories of everyday life for the pioneers and of important events that occurred during those 13 years before Nebraska became a state. This cheerful show is suitable for the entire family. The "Tradition" in Traditional Folk Music David examines how over the generations folk traditions of different cultures have merged to become our own traditions as immigrants have found their way to Nebraska. This presentation features demonstrations and stories of folk instruments such as harmonica, penny whistle, Lakota flute, ocarina, pan pipes, cow horn, bugle, musical saw, banjo, singing bowl, and limbertoys. This show is very flexible and works for audiences of any age. Train Songs and Tales of the Westward Rails What is it about trains that so easily engages one's imagination? Climb aboard with David Seay as he sings and plays a variety of railroad inspired songs and tells tales of the westward expansion of the rails towards Nebraska's western border in the mid-1800's. This upbeat excursion features storytelling, banjo, harmonica, whistles, and sing-alongs. Folk Traditions Through Music (3 to 8 hour, one day residency) Designed for school groups, these programs give each student hands-on experience with the harmonica and teach how music reflects cultural traditions and conveys them from one generation to the next. The entire residency occurs on a single day and can last from three to eight hours. During the last hour David will present "The 'Tradition' in Traditional Folk Music" (see above) which will include the workshop participants playing their harmonicas on a couple of songs. |
